Getting Started with Internet Web Conferencing
April 7, 2008
You’ve heard the hype. Web conferencing cuts travel expenses, helps us pay attention to the task at hand, and improves productivity. You’ve probably even sat in on a few web conferences yourself.
What’s holding you back from using Internet Web Conferencing to save travel and get more productive?
For many people, the barrier is fear. Fear of not knowing how to use the tools. Fear it being too expensive. Fear of the unknown. Which applies to you?
Using Internet Web Conferencing Tools
Let’s start with using the tools. Web conferencing has come a long way. Companies like WebEx and Live Meeting have worked hard to make it simple. An icon on your desktop helps you set up and launch meetings with just a click of a button. Participants can join in by clicking an email link and calling a phone number. How simple is that?
Once you’re connected, you just tell the software to display your desktop and you’re off! Eventually it’ll be worth learning to use a few more features, like virtual white boards and online chat. (My favorite is the whiteboard.)
Internet Web Conferencing Prices
Pricing for web conferencing is very flexible. WebEx has plans suitable for individual professionals, large corporations, and everyone between. Other vendors (Raindance, Microsoft, Citrix) have similar flexibility.
What to do now
Still not sure if you’re ready to take the plunge? Understandable. The hands-down best way to decide is to sign up for a free trial. Webex offers a 14-day trial with unlimited meetings (up to 10 people) during that period.
Sign up for the trial and take 15 minutes to run yourself through the tutorial. You’ll be ready to host your first web meeting!
